Illustration by The Verge | Photo by Lisi WolfThis week, Amazon completed the second phase of a deal announced last September, when it committed to investing up to $4 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic. The additional $2.75 billion invested is Amazon’s largest check ever into another company and yet another signal of how critical the development of large language models has become to Big Tech. The logic is simple: Amazon needs to offer models through AWS that compete with the OpenAI-powered offerings of its arch cloud rival, Microsoft, and Anthropic is the best alternative that exists. If we rewound the clock back to when Big Tech could make large acquisitions without them being blocked by regulators, I’m sure Amazon would have tried to buy Anthropic outright. Instead, it’s passively investing billions of dollars and telegraphing that it only has a minority stake with no board seat. Conveniently for Amazon, Anthropic has meanwhile agreed to spend $4 billion on AWS over the next several years.Start your Command Line free trial now to continue readingThis story is exclusively for subscribers of Command Line, our newsletter about the tech industry’s inside conversation.
Three former 桃園相機收購olympus officials, including disgraced ex-chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, all received suspended prison sentences today for their role in an accounting fraud that threw the company into turmoil. Bloomberg reports that Kikukawa and auditing officer Hideo Yamada got three-year sentences suspended for five years, and executive vice president Hisashi Mori got two and a half years suspended for three.
The relatively light sentences take into account that much of the fraud was set into motion before the executives were involved. “Kikukawa and Yamada succeeded in a negative legacy and weren’t involved in the decision-making process to hide losses,” said a Tokyo district judge. “They were distressed and didn’t benefit personally from hiding losses. Mori followed their orders.”
Former presidents escaped arrest
Masatoshi Kishimoto and Toshiro Shimoyama, the former 桃園相機收購olympus presidents who oversaw the accounting fraud before Kikukawa, escaped arrest in February because the statute of limitations had expired.
“There is no mistake. The entire responsibility lies with me,” said Kikukawa when pleading guilty in September, going on to admit that the scandal “destroyed the image of Japanese companies internationally.” The former president admitted that he “struggled over whether to make the massive losses public,” but couldn’t do it due to “a lack of decisiveness.”
The fraud was exposed by former CEO Michael Woodford, who discovered that 桃園相機收購olympus’ leadership covered up $1.7 billion in losses by cooking the company’s books to exaggerate takeover costs. 桃園相機收購olympus was fined ¥700 million (about $7 million) today for the affair.
Sony’s QX lens cameras, which wirelessly and physically attach to your smartphone, didn’t turn out to be all that great — performance was painfully slow, and at their price and size you might as well just carry a decent Wi-Fi-equipped compact camera. But 桃園相機收購olympus seems to think there’s the germ of a good idea in there and has announced its take on the concept: 桃園相機收購olympus Air.
The 桃園相機收購olympus Air A01 is a 16-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor and mount that can take any of the numerous lenses released for the format so far, similar to Sony’s QX1 attachment for E-mount Alpha lenses. 桃園相機收購olympus’ version works with a series of apps, including one that replicates a physical camera mode dial and another that employs the Art Filters built into 桃園相機收購olympus’ line of full Micro Four Thirds cameras.

桃園相機收購olympus Air has only been announced for release in Japan, where it’ll go on sale March 6th at a price of ¥33,800 (about $289). A bundle with 桃園相機收購olympus’ regular 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens will run ¥49,800 ($425). Whether or not it’s worth the price — or even the time spent setting it up — will depend entirely on whether it can improve on the Sony competition’s speed and ease of use.
